Are You Wearing Real Russian Extensions?

So how can you figure out whether your Russian, Virgin extensions are really what they claim they are? Let us use one of our most recent clients to explain…

Here at LDL, we don’t like to talk about what other salons do. We believe that our work speaks for itself, so there’s no need to focus on someone else’s. But in an industry where many clients are being sold a hair under the guide that it is a premium product, we feel the need to speak up.

We see it often; a client comes to us wearing what they think are Russian, virgin extensions. Their hair might be matted, tangled or losing its colour. Sometimes the wefts are falling apart or are entirely visible on the head. It takes us one look to know that they didn’t get what they thought they were paying for. We’re passionate about what we do and committed to providing the highest quality of service, so nothing frustrates us more than seeing a client who is blatantly unhappy with their hair – and for good reason.

So how can you figure out whether your Russian, Virgin extensions are really what they claim they are? Let us use one of our most recent clients to explain…

This lovely client came to us with the hair on the left; extensions that she had received just 4 days earlier from another salon. As you can see, she left with a stringy look that didn’t come close to blending with her natural hair. She was told that her extensions were a premium Russian, Virgin product, but she felt that something wasn’t right. She had seen so many flawless photos of women wearing gorgeous Russian wefts online; why didn’t hers look the same? So, after a few days of not being happy with her hair, she called LDL and booked an appointment.

And this is what we told her…

Unfortunately, this client wasn’t sold the beautiful Russian extensions she was looking forward to. This is important as Russian hair has unfortunately been loosely adapted to make people think they’re buying the best of the best. This truth is, it can be difficult to know whether you’re getting this highly sought-after option as many factories base themselves in Russia but source their hair from elsewhere around the world, such as China or India.

Choosing Russian or, more broadly, Caucasian hair is important for two reasons; 1) because the hair is fine in texture, which makes it ideal to work with and wear for long periods of time, and 2) because Caucasian hair comes in all colours and styles. It’s necessary, however, to note that this is not about race; it simply means that you can find the perfect hair for your extensions without resorting to colouring or chemically treating it.

As it turns out, this client’s extensions were factory-made. That’s why they never looked as beautiful as she had hoped, as factory options are extremely prone to matting, tangling and visibly separating themselves from her natural hair. But how do we know this? There were a few ways we could tell…

The hair was dyed…

The client said herself that when she washed her hair, she could smell the chemicals that were used to colour it. When we took out her wefts and took a closer look, we could see for ourselves that she was right; we could see the various different colours that were through the extensions.

Virgin hair by its very definition means untouched by any chemicals or treatments – so when we realised it was coloured, that immediately meant it wasn’t a Virgin product. It’s simple; coloured and treated hair will never be as healthy as untouched options. That’s why LDL only uses the very best Virgin hair for each of our gorgeous clients.

The extensions came pre-made…

Russian, virgin extensions do not come pre-made and ready to be installed. Instead, this type of hair comes in raw pony-tail form; cut straight from the donor’s head, bundled and sent to the salon. If you’re buying authentic Virgin hair, you should be able to see this raw pony-tail. If the only thing your extensionist can show you is a pre-made weft that they unwrap from plastic packaging, then it’s most likely factory made.

A custom, handmade weft like the ones we make here at LDL take anywhere between 4-6 hours to create. To save time and money, factories machine-make their weft and send it to salons in its final form. While this might mean you won’t have to wait as long to get your extensions, you will always see a more beautiful, long-lasting result with a custom option.

The hair didn’t have cuticles…

As we’ve written about before, factory hair is collected from multiple donor’s, as opposed to one donor like with Virgin hair. Because of this, the cuticles on factory hair – which are responsible for keeping your hair from tangling – face in different directions and begin to catch on each other. To avoid this problem, factories chemically strip the hair of its cuticle entirely and then coat it in silicone to make it feel smooth.

However, this only provides a temporary ‘fix’, just long enough to trick you into thinking the hair is soft and silky. As you wear and wash the hair, though, it will begin to matt together and become knotted. This, unfortunately, is the reality of wearing factory extensions – even if they seem beautiful at first, they will always let you down in the long run. Virgin hair, on the other hand, has its original cuticle intact, so you will never encounter the same problems.

Let’s talk installation…

Along with being sold factory hair, our client’s extensions were installed using a method that simply couldn’t provide the beautiful, long-term results she was after. The salon she went to used a single bead method, which not only causes the stringy, unnatural look that you can see in the before photo, but it also causes damage to natural hair over time. Even if the client had received genuine Russian hair, using this method she would never have walked out of the salon with a beautifully blended set of extensions. Instead, after several months of wearing them, she would likely find that her natural hair would begin falling out or severely thinning.

At LDL, we do the very opposite; our beaded tracking method protects and even helps your hair grow. Not only do we not use any glues or bonds throughout the installation process, but our wefts act as a ‘curtain’ on top of your natural hair, protecting it from the damage it might usually encounter. We have perfected our method, making it undetectable, robust and completely reliable. Our clients feel confident wearing their wefts because they know they will always look amazing – which is exactly the way you should feel, day in, day out.

Finding authentic Virgin hair…

Educating yourself and asking your extensionist the right questions is key to finding a genuine Virgin product that you can rely on. At LDL, this is our specialty. We know that you deserve to look and feel amazing every minute of every day, and that’s what we aim to provide with our extensions.
